In addition, horse racing offers opportunities for professional growth, the ability to travel and work outdoors, and a sense of fulfilment knowing you’re contributing to a centuries-old tradition. What’s more, it’s an industry where the wellbeing of its horses and people is paramount.
Role opportunities
From hands-on roles like stable staff and jockeys to strategic positions like trainers and racing secretaries, the racing industry offers a wealth of diverse career paths. Each role presents unique experiences and opportunities for growth, all contributing to the exhilarating spectacle of race day.
The starting point for most people in the horseracing industry is to work within a training yard as stable staff. Stable staff take care of the horses in their yards, riding out, taking them racing and grooming them. Stable staff can be riding or non-riding positions.
Most jockeys begin as stable staff, then progress through further training to become licensed professional jockeys. This takes time and dedication to build up experience, but if it’s what you aspire to, it can be a fantastic job.
A busy racing yard is always supported by a super-efficient racing secretary! If you love racing, but are looking for an office-based position, this could be the role for you.
Travelling Head Grooms are responsible for the care of the horses when they are travelling to race meetings across the UK and further afield. Top UK based racehorses often travel to France, Dubai, USA & Australia to race.
Horseracing is an International industry and there are many other positions within horseracing which can enable you to travel across the UK and, if you are lucky, across the world.
Many of the roles include accommodation, and it’s an industry with excitement and the love of horses at its core.
