Newmarket Housing Trust – Trustee role (x2)

Role title: Trustee – we are seeking 2 Trustees (1 x safeguarding and 1 x housing young people)

Location: Remote with occasional in person meetings in Newmarket 

Time commitment: Up to 1.5 day a month until August 2027, plus 5 Board meetings a year 

Remuneration: Voluntary (expenses reimbursed) 

About Newmarket Housing Trust 

Newmarket Housing Trust supports young people and those in financial hardship working in the Horse Racing Industry in Newmarket to access affordable and appropriate housing. 

The racehorse industry is vital to Newmarket, often dubbed the “Home of Racing.”  This historic town is renowned for its exceptional training facilities and is recognised as the birthplace of thoroughbred racing in the UK.  There are over 6,500 people employed in the Horse Racing Industry in Newmarket, but Newmarket’s location to surrounding cities and growing popularity as a commuter town make finding affordable and safe accommodation an increasing challenge. 

Many young people across the UK enter the industry each year on apprenticeships, initially completing a residential training course at an education provider, such as the British Racing School, before being employed by a training yard or stud to complete their apprenticeship. It is particularly challenging for these young people under the age of 18 to find accommodation, as they are unable by law to hold a tenancy leaving them vulnerable or unable to enter paid employment in Newmarket. 

Our first project, a 24 room Halls of Residence with live in warden, is currently under construction and due to open August 2027. This accommodation will address many of the issues young people working in horseracing face in Newmarket and will aid the transition from education to employment by providing affordable accommodation, onsite guidance and support and promoting wellbeing. The accommodation will house 16–18-year-olds who have graduated from the British Racing School, National Horseracing College or National Stud and have an offer of employment in Newmarket.  

Purpose of the role 

As a Trustee, you will provide governance and strategic oversight to ensure Newmarket Housing Trust delivers on its mission, operates effectively, and complies with its legal and regulatory requirements. 

In addition to the above, we are looking for individuals who have significant experience in either safeguarding or housing, in particular housing young people. 

Key responsibilities 

Key responsibilities include: 

• Ensure Newmarket Housing Trust operates in line with its charitable objectives and legal obligations set out within its Articles of Association. 

• Support effective governance and decision-making by setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets. 

• Ensure the financial stability of the organisation. 

• Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the 

proper investment of the organisation’s funds. 

• Contribute to the development and oversight of Newmarket Housing Trusts strategy. 

• Monitoring and evaluating performance against agreed targets. 

• Provide oversight, assurance, support and challenge to fellow Trustees and staff. 

• Support delivery of high-impact projects and initiatives. 

Personal specification 

You may bring: 

• Experience at Board, senior leadership or strategic level in a charity or organisation with a focus on young people and/or housing  

• Knowledge of governance, accountability, and organisational oversight 

• Strategic thinking, sound judgement, and the ability to influence at Board level 

• An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair and Trustees 

• Knowledge of or interest in the Horse Racing Industry 

• Experience in housing, education and young people sectors. 

We also welcome applicants with the necessary skills who are looking for their first Trustee or Non-Executive role. 

We are particularly interested in people who demonstrate: 

• Senior experience in either safeguarding and/or housing, in particular young people 

• Knowledge or experience of supporting young people to access available guidance and support 

• An understanding of the challenges facing young people and those facing financial hardship 

• A track record of commitment to promoting equality and diversity 

• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills 

• Confidence to provide challenge and contribute to strategic decision-making 

• Willingness to be available and to support the charity in your areas of expertise
