Rider Development Pathway
Supporting riders within horse racing
The Rider Development Pathway (RDP) is designed to support riders at all levels within horse racing.
From young people starting out in pony racing, to those working in yards and others hoping to take out their jockey’s license, its aims are to raise the standard of riding across the sport, thereby helping to improve the training of racehorses and positioning the UK as the pre-eminent racing nation.
The RDP will be delivered by the British Racing School, which already delivers the Jockey Coaching Programme, and will initially focus on rider coaching in yards.
Support for trainers and staff
The Rider Development Pathway will begin in Spring 2026 and regional rider coaches will be in contact with yards in their areas to sign them up and agree on what coaching should be delivered.
We know that trainers are best placed to know what the needs of their team are and they will work with the rider coach to identify staff in their yards to be coached and a senior member of staff who can support riders in between rider coaching sessions.
What will it involve?
Rider coaches will attend yards on a monthly basis to coach staff and develop personal development plans to work towards. The plans will be aligned to the Rider Skills Matrix and will be accessible via the Jockey Coaching app to staff and trainers so they are able to track progress.
Rider coaches will also be responsible for developing the in-yard coaching capabilities, helping skilled staff in yards to coach developing riders and supporting them to get their coaching qualifications
