All at BRS were delighted to watch Capricorn Prince, one of our cherished former racehorses, and riding coach Lydia de Souza, take to the stage as a lead pony/rider at last week’s Royal Ascot. As a key part of our training squad here in Newmarket, Capricorn Prince is used to steadying the nerves of young riders, but last week he guided several international runners to the start of some hugely prestigious races
Throughout the week, the pair played a pivotal role, ponying for:
- Asfoora in the King Charles III Stakes (Tuesday, 17 June)
- Lennilu in the Queen Mary Stakes (Wednesday, 18 June)
- Tough Critic in the Windsor Castle Stakes (Wednesday, 18 June)
- Shisospicy in the Commonwealth Cup (Friday, 20 June)
A former eight-time winner trained by Gary and Josh Moore, Capricorn Prince retired to the School in 2024 and has since become a firm favourite among trainees (and staff!). Lydia de Souza, herself a graduate of the BRS training programme, plays a pivotal role in the on-site coaching of students, but also organising equine based activities around the School throughout the year.
We’re immensely proud of both horse and rider, representing the British Racing School on such a prestigious occasion and are equally proud that our team was able to provide such an important service at such an iconic event. We know that both Capricorn Prince and Lydia will be inspiring our students for years to come!
