How to become a trainer

Autumn is fast approaching, and we’ve got three Trainer’s Module courses coming up, so we wanted to give a little insight on what it takes to embark on a career (and life!) as a racehorse trainer.

As a natural career progression for some people working in horseracing, becoming a licensed trainer or a permit holder is the ultimate aim, and those successful trainers we see featured on Racing TV and winning big races make it look so easy, right?!

As racing has developed and become more regulated and professional, so has the application to hold a Trainer’s Licence. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Attain your Level 3 Diploma in Racehorse Care and Management
  • Complete Trainer’s Modules 1, 2 and 3 (in any order)
  • Attend a one day seminar at Weatherby’s
  • Pass the BHA due diligence checks and financial requirements

And here are some useful tips:

  • Level 3 Diploma NEVER goes out of date – once you have passed this, it is yours indefinitely.
  • You can study for your Level 3 as an apprenticeship which would be supported by your employer. This pathway offers more guidance and help than applying individually (but it does take a little longer)
  • A Level 3 Diploma in Racehorse Care & Management is required for attendance on the Trainer’s Module 1 course
  • You can attend the Trainer’s Modules in any order (Modules 2 & 3 do NOT require the Level 3)
  • If you are applying for a PERMIT to train only, you do not need to attend Modules 2 & 3 of the Trainer’s Modules
  • Permit holders are only able to train horses owned by themselves or immediate family members.
  • The seminar is hosted by Weatherby’s and must be booked by them directly (and don’t leave it till the last minute or you may miss out!)
  • The Trainer’s Modules currently cost £810 each (accommodation is available at BRS for £40 per night)

The next Trainer’s Module dates are:

Module 1 – 23-27th October

Module 2 – 20-24th November

Module 3 – 4-8th December
