If you’re wondering how to get into your chosen career, an apprenticeship can often be your best choice.
Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding about apprenticeships is that they are only for non-academic people. In reality, an apprenticeship is for everyone! It gives you the chance to achieve the necessary qualifications you need for your career, just like Further and Higher Education.
However, with an apprenticeship you are getting relevant work experience at the same time, which is highly desirable for any employer.
Apprenticeships are also a great way to get known and make contacts in the industry.
And they give you a chance to ‘test the waters’; working in the industry from the start will afford you a far better idea of whether it’s the right one for you.
The success of apprenticeships is clear to see – over 90% of apprentices currently go into work or further training.
Research also showed 89% of apprentices are satisfied with their apprenticeship; 97% of apprentices said their ability to do the job had improved, and 92% of apprentices said their career prospects had improved.
An apprenticeship is also a financially rewarding path to take. As well as earning as you learn and avoiding hefty tuition fees, on average achieving a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship boosts earnings by 11% and 16% respectively.
The BRS has run a successful apprenticeship scheme for many years, and hundreds of students have achieved their qualifications and gone on to enjoy long and varied careers in the horse racing industry.
“Completing the Apprenticeship course at the BRS is one of the best things I have ever done, it really prepared me for working life in a racing yard.” – Louise Surridge, BRS Graduate 2015.
